1. Then addressing me, He spoke and said, Hear, neither be afraid, O righteous Enoch, you scribe of righteousness: approach hither, and hear my voice.

 1. And he answered and spoke to me with his word: "Hear, and fear not, Enoch, thou just man and scribe of justice, approach hither, and hear my words.

 1. And He answered and said to me, and I heard His voice: 'Fear not, Enoch, thou righteous man and scribe of righteousness: approach hither and hear my voice.

 1. Då vände Han sig till mig, talte och sade: hör och blif icke förskräckt, du rättfärdige Enoch, rättrådighetens skrifvare; nalkas hit och hör min röst.

2. Go, say to the Watchers of heaven, who have sent you to pray for them, You ought to pray for men, and not men for you.

3. Wherefore have you forsaken the lofty and holy heaven, which endures for ever, and have lain with women; have defile yourselves with the daughters of men; have taken to yourselves wives; have acted like the sons of the earth, and have begotten an impious offspring? (23)

(23) An impious offspring. Literally, "giants" (Charles, p. 82; Knibb, p. 101).

 3. Why have ye left the high, holy, and everlasting heaven, and lain with women, and defiled yourselves with the daughters of men, and taken wives unto yourselves, and acted like the children of earth, and begotten giants as sons?

 3. Wherefore have ye left the high, holy, and eternal heaven, and lain with women, and defiled yourselves with the daughters of men and taken to yourselves wives, and done like the children of earth, and begotten giants (as your) sons?

 3. Hvarföre hafven J öfvergifvit den höga och heliga himmelen, hvilken varar i evighet, och beblandat eder med qvinnor; hafven befläckat eder med menniskornas döttrar, hafven tagit eder hustrur, hafven gjort lika som jordens barn och hafven aflat en ogudaktig afkomma?

 3. Hvi hafven I lämnat den höga, heliga, eviga himmelen och sovit hos kvinnorna och orenat eder med människornas döttrar och tagit eder hustrur och gjort såsom jordens barn och födt jättesöner?
4. You being spiritual, holy, and possessing a life which is eternal, have polluted yourselves with women; have begotten in carnal blood; have lusted in the blood of men; and have done as those who are flesh and blood do. These however die and perish.

 4. While ye were spiritual, holy, having eternal life, ye defiled yourselves with women, and with the blood of flesh have begotten children, and have lusted after the blood of men, and have produced flesh and blood as they produce who die and are destroyed.

 4. And though ye were holy, spiritual, living the eternal life, you have defiled yourselves with the blood of women, and have begotten (children) with the blood of flesh, and, as the children of men, have lusted after flesh and blood as those also do who die and perish.

 4. J som ären andeliga väsen, heliga och ägande ett lif, som är evigt, hafven besmittat eder med qvinnor; hafven aflat med köttsligt blod, hafven haft lystnad till menskligt blod och hafven gjort såsom de göra, hvilka äro af kött och blod. Desse dö likväl och förgås.

 4. Medan I voren andliga och heliga, i åtnjutande af det eviga lifvet, haven I orenat eder med kvinnor och födt barn, haft begärelse till människor och aflat kött och blod, såsom de dödliga och förgängliga pläga göra.
5. Therefore have I given to them wives, that they might cohabit with them; that sons might be born of them; and that this might be transacted upon earth.

 5. Therefore I have given them wives that they might impregnate them and children be born by them, as it is done on earth.

 5. Therefore have I given them wives also that they might impregnate them, and beget children by them, that thus nothing might be wanting to them on earth.

 5. Derföre hafven J gifvit dem hustrur, att de skulle bo tillsammans med dem, att de skulle föda söner och att detta skulle verkställas på jorden.

6. But you from the beginning* were made spiritual, possessing a life which is eternal, and not subject to death for ever.

Electronic edition: The original text doesn't have the word "beginning" here. Thus the text does not say that the angels were made spiritual from the beginning of their existance, only that they were made spiritual sometime before they descended to the earth.

 6. Ye were formerly spiritual, living an eternal life without death to all the generations of the world.

 6. But you were formerly spiritual, living the eternal life, and immortal for all generations of the world.

 6. Men J hafven från begynnelsen* varit andeliga väsenden, ägande ett lif, som är evigt och ej någonsin underkastadt döden.

 6. Men förut voren I andliga, i besittning af det eviga, odödliga lifvet under världens alla släkten.
7. Therefore I made not wives for you, because, being spiritual, your dwelling is in heaven.

 7. Therefore I have not made for you any wives, for spiritual beings have their home in heaven.

 7. And therefore I have not appointed wives for you; for as for the spiritual ones of the heaven, in heaven is their dwelling.

 7. Derföre har jag ej skapat några makar åt eder, emedan J, såsom andeliga väsenden, hafven eder boning i himmelen.

 7. Därför har jag icke skapat hustrur åt eder, ty de andliga hava sin boning i himmelen.
8. Now the giants, who have been born of spirit and of flesh, shall be called upon earth evil spirits, and on earth shall be their habitation.

 8. And now the giants, who have been begotten from body and flesh, will be called evil spirits on earth, and their dwelling-places will be upon the earth.

 8. And now, the giants, who are produced from the spirits and flesh, shall be called evil spirits upon the earth, and on the earth shall be their dwelling.

 8. Nu skola de jättar, som blifvit födda af anda och kött på jorden, kallas onda andar, och på jorden skall deras boning vara.

 8. Och jättarna, som äro födda af kött och blod, skola på jorden kallas onda andar, och där skall deras hemvist vara.
9. Evil spirits shall proceed from their flesh, because they were created from above; from the holy Watchers was their beginning and primary foundation. Evil spirits shall they be upon earth, and the spirits of the wicked shall they be called.

 9. Evil spirits proceed from their bodies; because they are created from above, their beginning and first basis being from the holy watchers, they will be evil spirits upon the earth, and will be called evil spirits.

 9. Evil spirits have proceeded from their bodies; because they are born from men, and from the holy Watchers is their beginning and primal origin; they shall be evil spirits on earth, and evil spirits shall they be called.

 9. Onda andar skola utgå af deras kött, emedan de voro skapade ofvanefter, från de helige väktarne var deras början och deras första upprinnelse. Onda andar skola de blifva på jorden, och den ogudaktiges andar skola de kallas.

10. The habitation of the spirits of heaven shall be in heaven; but upon earth shall be the habitation of terrestrial spirits, who are born on earth. (24)

(24) Note the many implications of vss. 3-8 regarding the progeny of evil spirits.

 10. But the spirits of heaven have their dwelling-places in heaven, and the spirits of the earth, who were born on the earth, have their dwelling-places on earth.

 10. [As for the spirits of heaven, in heaven shall be their dwelling, but as for the spirits of the earth which were born upon the earth, on the earth shall be their dwelling.]

11. The spirits of the giants shall be like clouds, (25) which shall oppress, corrupt, fall, content, and bruise upon earth. They shall cause lamentation. No food shall they eat; and they shall be thirsty; they shall be concealed, and shall not (26) rise up against the sons of men, and against women; for they come forth during the days of slaughter and destruction.

(25) The Greek word for "clouds" here, nephelas, may disguise a more ancient reading, Napheleim (Nephilim). (26) Shall not. Nearly all manuscripts contain this negative, but Charles, Knibb, and others believe the "not" should be deleted so the phrase reads "shall rise up."

 11. And the spirits of the giants, who cast themselves upon the clouds, will be destroyed and fall, and will battle and cause destruction on the earth, and do evil; they will take no kind of food, nor will they become thirsty, and they will be invisible. And these spirits will not (?) rise up against the children of men and against the women, because they have proceeded from them. In the days of murder and destruction.

 11. And the spirits of the giants afflict, oppress, destroy, attack, do battle, and work destruction on the earth, and cause trouble: they take no food, but nevertheless hunger and thirst, and cause offences. And these spirits shall rise up against the children of men and against the women, because they have proceeded from them.

 11. Jättarnes andar skola likna molnen, hvilka skola förtrycka, förderfva, kullstörta, strida och väcka oro på jorden. De skola förorsaka veklagan, ingen föda skola de förtära; och de skola blifva törstiga; de skola döljas och skola icke resa sig upp emot menniskornas söner och emot qvinnorna; ty de gingo ut under nederlagets och förödelsens dagar.

 11. Och jättarnas andar, som hafva sitt tillhåll i molnen, skola vålla fördärf och störta ned och föröfva våldsdåd och anställa förödelse och anstifta olyckor på jorden. Och de skola vara osynliga och hvarken behöva äta eller dricka. Och dessa väsenden skola uppresa sig mot människobarnen och mot kvinnorna, emedan de härstamma från dem.
12. 12. 12. 12. * Nätutgåvan: Den etiopiska texten har inte ordet "begynnelsen" här. Texten säger alltså inte att änglarna varit andliga från begynnelsen av sin tillvaro, bara att de varit andliga innan de nedsteg på jorden.
