1. The book of the revolutions of the luminaries of heaven, according to their respective classes, their respective powers, their respective periods, their respective names, the places where they commence their progress, and their respective months, which Uriel, the holy angel who was with me, explained to me; he who conducted them. The whole account of them, according to every year of the world for ever, until a new work shall be effected, which will be eternal.

1. The book of the courses of the luminaries of heaven, how it is with each one of them, as to their classes, their governments, and their times, as to their names and origin, and as to their months, which their leader Uriêl, a holy angel who was with me, showed to me, and their whole description as it is he showed to me, and how it is with respect to all the years of the world and to eternity, till a new creation is made which will continue to eternity.

1. The book of the courses of the luminaries of the heaven, the relations of each, according to their classes, their dominion and their seasons, according to their names and places of origin, and according to their months, which Uriel, the holy angel, who was with me, who is their guide, showed me; and he showed me all their laws exactly as they are, and how it is with regard to all the years of the world and unto eternity, till the new creation is accomplished which dureth till eternity.

1. Boken om de himmelska kropparnes omvexlingar efter deras indelning, deras makt, deras omloppstider, deras namn, de ställen, hvarest de börja sin gång, och deras månader, hvilket Uriel, den helige ängel, som var med mig, förklarade för mig, han som styrer dem. 2. This is the first law of the luminaries. The sun and the light arrive at the gates of heaven, which are on the east, and on the west of it at the western gates of heaven.

2. And this is the first law of the luminaries: the luminary sun has its ascent in the portals of the heavens which are towards the east, and his descent in the western portals of heaven.

2. And this is the first law of the luminaries: the luminary the Sun has its rising in the eastern portals of the heaven, and its setting in the western portals of the heaven.

3. I beheld the gates whence the sun goes forth; and the gates where the sun sets; In which gates also the moon rises and sets; and I beheld the conductors of the stars, among those who precede them; six gates were at the rising, and six at the setting of the sun. *) All these respectively, one after another, are on a level; and numerous windows are on the right and on the left sides of those gates.

3. And I saw six portals, out of which the sun ascends, and six portals into which the sun descends; the moon also rises and sets in these portals, and the leaders of the stars and those led by them; six in the east and six in the west, *) and all, each after the other, aright; also many windows to the right and to the left of these portals.

3. And I saw six portals in which the sun rises, and six portals in which the sun sets and the moon rises and sets in these portals, and the leaders of the stars and those whom they lead: six in the east and six in the west, *) and all following each other in accurately corresponding order: also many windows to the right and left of these portals.

3. Jag såg portarna, hvarifrån solen utgår, och de portar, genom hvilka solen går ned. Äfven de portar, hvarigenom månan uppgår och nedgår. Och jag såg stjernornas ledare ibland dem, som gingo framför dem. Sex portar voro vid solens uppgång, och sex vid dess nedgång. *) Alla stjernorna, de ena efter den andra, stå på en jemn yta, och otaliga fönster äro på högra och venstra sidorne af dessa portar.

4. First proceeds forth that great luminary, which is called the sun; the orb of which is as the orb of heaven, the whole of it being replete with splendid and flaming fire.

4. And first comes forth the great luminary called the sun; and his circuit is like the circuit of the heavens, and he is entirely filled with flaming and heating fire.

4. And first there goes forth the great luminary, named the Sun, and his circumference is like the circumference of the heaven, and he is quite filled with illuminating and heating fire.

4. Först utgår det stora ljuset, som kallas solen, hvars klot är såsom himmelens klot; varande helt och hållet uppfylld af lysande och lågande eld.

5. Its chariot, where it ascends, the wind blows. The sun sets in heaven, and, returning by the north, to proceed towards the east, is conducted so as to enter by that gate, and illuminate the face of heaven.

5. The wagons on which he ascends are driven by the wind, and the sun descending disappears from the heavens and returns through the north in order to reach the east, and is led that he comes to that portal and shines on the surface of heaven.

5. The chariot on which he ascends, the wind drives, and the sun goes down from the heaven and returns through the north in order to reach the east, and is so guided that he comes to the appropriate (lit. ’that') portal and shines in the face of the heaven.

5. Dess vagn, då den uppstiger, föres af vinden. Solens nedgång på himmelen och återvändande genom norden, att gå tillbaka till öster, styres så likasom för att ingå genom porten och sprida ljus öfver himmelens yta.

6. In the same manner it goes forth in the first month by the great gate. It goes forth through the fourth of those six gates, which are at the rising of the sun.

6. And thus he comes forth, in the first month, in the great portal, and he comes forth from the fourth of these six portals towards the east.

6. In this way he rises in the first month in the great portal, which is the fourth those six portals in the east.

7. And in the fourth gate, through which the sun with the moon proceeds, in the first part of it, ⁽⁷⁶⁾ there are twelve open windows; from which issues out a flame, when they are opened in their proper periods.

7. And in that fourth portal, from which the sun comes forth in the first month, there are twelve window openings, from which a flame proceeds when they are opened in their time.

8. When the sun rises in heaven, it goes forth through this fourth gate thirty days, and by the fourth gate in the west of heaven on a level with it descends.

8. When the sun rises from the heavens he comes out of that fourth portal thirty mornings, and descends directly into the fourth western portal of heaven.

8. When the sun rises in the heaven, he comes forth through that fourth portal thirty mornings in succession, and sets accurately in the fourth portal in the west of the heaven.

8. Då Solen uppgår i himmelen, går den i trettio dagar fram genom denna fjerde port, och genom fjerde porten i vester på himmelen, i likhet med dess nedgående.

9. During that period the day is lengthened from the day, and the night curtailed from the night for thirty days.

9. And in those days the day is daily lengthened, and the nights nightly shortened to the thirtieth morning.

9. And during this period the day becomes daily longer and the night nightly shorter to the thirtieth morning.

9. Under denna tid blir dagen dagligen förlängd, och med hvarje natt minskas nätterna under trettio dagar,

10. And then the day is longer by two parts than the night. The day is precisely ten parts, and the night is eight.

10. And in that day the day is two parts longer than the night, and the day is exactly ten parts and the night eight parts.

10. On that day the day is longer than the night by a ninth part, and the day amounts exactly to ten parts and the night to eight parts.

10. och sedan är dagen två delar längre än natten. Dagen är jemnt tio delar, och natten åtta.

11. The sun goes forth through this fourth gate, and sets in it, and turns to the fifth gate during thirty days; after which it proceeds from, and sets in, the fifth gate.

11. And the sun comes forth from this fourth portal and sets in the fourth and returns to the fifth portal of the east thirty mornings, and comes forth from it and descends into the fifth portal.

11. And the sun rises from that fourth portal, and sets in the fourth and returns to the fifth portal of the east thirty mornings, and rises from it and sets in the fifth portal.

11. Solen utgår genom denna fjerde port, och nedgår i den, och vänder till den femte porten under trettio dagar, hvarefter den går upp och går ned genom den femte porten.

12. Then the day becomes lengthened by a second portion, so that it is eleven parts: while the night becomes shortened, and is only seven parts.

12. From then on the day is lengthened two parts, and the day is eleven parts, and the night is shortened and is seven parts.

12. And then the day becomes longer by †two† parts and amounts to eleven parts, and the night becomes shorter and amounts to seven parts.

12. Då blir dagen förlängd för andra gången, så att den blir elfva delar, medan natten förkortas och endast blir sju delar.

13. The sun now returns to the east, entering into the sixth gate, and rising and setting in the sixth gate thirty-one days, on account of its signs.

13. And the sun returns to the east and goes into the sixth portal, and comes forth and descends into the sixth portal, thirty-one mornings on account of its sign.

13. And it returns to the east and enters into the sixth portal, and rises and sets in the sixth portal one-and-thirty mornings on account of its sign.

13. Nu återvänder solen till öster, ingående genom sjette porten och uppgående och nedgående genom sjette porten i trettioen dagar, i följd af dessa tecken.

14. At that period the day is longer than the night, being twice as long as the night; and become twelve parts; But the night is shortened, and becomes six parts.

14. And on that day the day is longer than the night, and the day will be double the night, and the day is twelve parts, and the night is shorter and is six parts.

14. On that day the day becomes longer than the night, and the day becomes double the night, and the day becomes twelve parts, and the night is shortened and becomes six parts.

14. Vid denna tid är dagen längre än natten, varande dubbelt så lång som natten, och blir tolf delar. Men natten förkortas och blir sex delar.

15. Then the sun rises up, that the day may be shortened, and the night lengthened. And the sun returns toward the east entering into the sixth gate, where it rises and sets for thirty days.

15. And the sun is raised so that the day is shortened and the night is lengthened, and the sun returns to the east and enters the sixth portal and rises from it and sets thirty mornings.

15. And the sun mounts up to make the day shorter and the night longer, and the sun returns to the east and enters into the sixth portal, and rises from it and sets thirty mornings.

15. Sedan uppstiger solen, på det dagen skall förkortas och natten förlängas. Och solen återvänder mot öster, ingående i sjette porten, hvarest den uppgår och nedgår i trettio dagar.

16. When that period is completed, the day becomes shortened precisely one part, so that it is eleven parts, while the night is seven parts.

16. And when the thirty mornings are completed the day diminishes by exactly one part, and the day is eleven parts and the night seven parts.

16. And when thirty mornings are accomplished, the day decreases by exactly one part, and becomes eleven parts, and the night seven.

16. Då denna tid är fulländad, blir dagen förkortad jemt en del, så att den är elfva delar medan natten är sju delar.

17. Then the sun goes from the west, from that sixth gate, and proceeds eastwards, rising in the fifth gate for thirty days, and setting again westwards in the fifth gate of the west.

17. And the sun comes forth from this sixth portal in the west and goes to the east and rises in the fifth portal thirty mornings and sets in the west again in the fifth portal.

17. And the sun goes forth from that sixth portal in the west, and goes to the east and rises in the fifth portal for thirty mornings, and sets in the west again in the fifth western portal.

17. Då går solen från vester från denna sjette port och begifver sig öster ut, uppstigande i femte porten under trettio dagar och nedgående åter vester uti femte porten af vester.

18. At that period the day becomes shortened two parts; and is ten parts, while the night is eight parts.

18. On that day the day diminishes two parts, and the day will be ten parts and the night eight parts.

18. On that day the day decreases by †two† parts, and amounts to ten parts and the night to eight parts.

18. Vid denna tid blir dagen förkortad två delar, och är tio delar, men natten är åtta delar.

19. Then the sun goes from the fifth gate, as it sets in the fifth gate of the west; and rises in the fourth gate for thirty-one days, on account of its signs, setting in the west.

19. And the sun comes forth from that fifth portal and descends into the fifth portal of the west and rises in the fourth portal, on account of its sign, thirty-one mornings and descends in the west.

19. And the sun goes forth from that fifth portal and sets in the fifth portal of the west, and rises in the fourth portal for one-and-thirty mornings on account of its sign, and sets in the west.

19. Då går Solen från den femte porten, då han nedgår i den femte porten af vester, och uppgår i den fjerde porten i trettioen dagar, i följd af dessa tecken, nedgående i vester.

20. At that period the day is made equal with the night; and, being equal with it, the night becomes nine parts, and the day nine parts.

20. On that day the day is equal to the night and becomes equal, and the night is nine parts and the day nine parts.

20. On that day the day is equalized with the night, [and becomes of equal length], and the night amounts to nine parts and the day to nine parts.

20. Vid denna tid blir dagen lika med natten; och såsom lika med hvarandra blir natten nio delar och dagen nio delar.

21. Then the sun goes from that gate, as it sets in the west; and returning to the east proceeds by the third gate for thirty days, setting in the west at the third gate.

21. And the sun comes forth from that portal and sets in the west and returns to the east and comes forth from the third portal thirty mornings and sets in the west in the third portal.

21. And the sun rises from that portal and sets in the west, and returns to the east and rises thirty mornings in the third portal and sets in the west in the third portal.

21. Och sedan går solen från den porten, då han nedgår i vester, och återvändande till öster begifver han sig genom tredje porten i trettio dagar, nedgående i vester genom tredje porten.

22. At that period the night is lengthened from the day during thirty mornings, and the day is curtailed from the day during thirty days; the night being ten parts precisely, and the day eight parts.

22. And on that day the night is longer than the day to the thirtieth morning, and the day becomes shorter daily to the thirtieth morning, and the night is exactly ten parts and the day eight parts.

22. And on that day the night becomes longer than the day, and night becomes longer than night, and day shorter than day till the thirtieth morning, and the night amounts exactly to ten parts and the day to eight parts.

22. Vid denna tid blir natten förlängd från dagen under trettio morgnar, och dagen förkortas från natten under trettio dagar, blifvande natten jemnt tio delar och dagen åtta delar.

23. The sun now goes from the third gate, as it sets in the third gate in the west; but returning to the east, it proceeds by the second gate of the east for thirty days. In like manner also it sets in the second gate in the west of heaven.

23. And the sun comes forth from that third portal and sets in the third portal in the west and returns to the east, and the sun goes into the second portal of the east thirty mornings, and in like manner into the second portal in the west of the heavens.

23. And the sun rises from that third portal and sets in the third portal in the west and returns to the east, and for thirty mornings rises in the second portal in the east, and in like manner sets in the second portal in the west of the heaven.

23. Solen går nu från den tredje porten, då den nedgår genom den tredje porten i vester; men återvändande till öster utgår den genom andra porten i öster under trettio dagar. På lika sätt går den äfven ned i andra porten i vester af himmelen.

24. At that period the night is eleven parts, and the day seven parts.

24. And on that day the night is eleven parts and the day seven parts.

24. And on that day the night amounts to eleven parts and the day to seven parts.

24. Vid denna tid blir natten elfva delar och dagen sju delar.

25. Then the sun goes at that time from the second gate, as it sets in the second gate in the west; but returns to the east, proceeding by the first gate, for thirty-one days. And sets in the west in the first gate.

25. And the sun comes forth on that day from the second portal and descends in the west into the second portal and returns to the east in the first portal thirty-one mornings and descends into the west into the first portal.

25. And the sun rises on that day from that second portal and sets in the west in the second portal, and returns to the east into the first portal for one-and-thirty mornings, and sets in the first portal in the west of the heaven.

25. Då går Solen vid den tiden från den andra porten, då den nedgår i den andra porten i vester; men den återvänder till öster, begifvande sig till den första porten under trettioen dagar. Och nedgår i vester i första porten.

26. At that period that night is lengthened as much again as the day. It is twelve parts precisely, while the day is six parts.

26. And on that day the night will be so long that it will be the double of the day, and the night is exactly twelve parts and the day six parts.

26. And on that day the night becomes longer and amounts to the double of the day: and the night amounts exactly to twelve parts and the day to six.

26. Vid denna tid blir natten förlängd, lika så mycket som dagen varit förut. Den blir jemnt tolf delar, medan dagen blir sex delar.

27. The sun has thus completed its beginnings, and a second time goes round from these beginnings. Into that first gate it enters for thirty days, and sets in the west, in the opposite part of heaven.

27. And with that the sun has completed his stations, and he again returns to his station and enters in this portal thirty mornings; he rises and sets opposite it in the west.

27. And the sun has (therewith) traversed the divisions of his orbit and turns again on those divisions of his orbit, and enters that portal thirty mornings and sets also in the west opposite to it.

27. Solen har sålunda fullbordat sina begynnelser och går för andra gången omkring från dessa begynnelser. I den porten ingå hon för åtta dagar och går ned i vester i den motsatta delen af himmelen.

28. At that period the night is contracted in its length a fourth part, that is, one portion, and becomes eleven parts. The day is seven parts.

28. And on that day the night diminishes in length by one part, and is eleven parts and the day seven parts.

28. And on that night has the night decreased in length by a †ninth† part, and the night has become eleven parts and the day seven parts.

29. Then the sun returns, and enters into the second gate of the east. It returns by these beginnings thirty days, rising and setting.

29. And the sun returns and goes into the second portal of the east and returns to his course thirty mornings, rising and setting.

29. And the sun has returned and entered into the second portal in the east, and returns on those his divisions of his orbit for thirty mornings, rising and setting.

29. Då återvänder solen och ingår i andra porten af öster. Hon återkommer genom dessa begynnelser trettio dagar, uppgående och nedgående.

31. And on that day the sun comes forth from the second portal and descends in the west and returns to the east and rises in the third portal thirty-one mornings and sets in the west of the heavens.

31. And on that day the sun rises from that portal, and sets in the west, and returns to the east, and rises in the third portal for one-and-thirty mornings, and sets in the west of the heaven.

31. Sedan går solen från den andra porten och nedgår i vester, men återvänder till öster och uppgår i öster i den tredje porten, trettioen dagar nedgående i vester på himmelen.

32. At that period the night becomes shortened. It is nine parts. And the night is equal with the day. The year is precisely three hundred and sixty-four days.

32. And on that day the night is shortened and is nine parts, and the day is nine parts, and the night is equal with the day, and the year has exactly three hundred and sixty-four days.

32. On that day the night decreases and amounts to nine parts, and the day to nine parts, and the night is equal to the day and the year is exactly as to its days three hundred and sixty-four.

32. Vid denna tid blir natten förkortad, den blir nio delar, och natten blir lika med dagen, och året är jemnt trehundrade sextio fyra dagar.

33. The lengthening of the day and night, and the contraction of the day and night, are made to differ from each other by the progress of the sun.

33. And the length of the day and of the night, and the shortness of the day and of the night — by the course of the sun they are made separated.

33. And the length of the day and of the night, and the shortness of the day and of the night arise – through the course of the sun these distinctions are made (lit. ’they are separated').

33. Dagens och nattens förlängning, och dagens och nattens förminskning, komma att skiljas från hvarandra genom solens gång.

34. By means of this progress the day is daily lengthened, and the night greatly shortened.

34. On that account the day-course becomes longer daily and the night-course shorter nightly.

34. So it comes that its course becomes daily longer, and its course nightly shorter.

34. Förmedelst denna gång blir dagen dagligen förlängd och natten med hvarje natt förminskad.

35. This is the law and progress of the sun, and its turning when it turns back, turning during sixty days, ⁽⁷⁷⁾ and going forth. This is the great everlasting luminary, that which he names the sun for ever and ever.

(77) That is, it is sixty days in the same gates, viz. Thirty days twice every year (Laurence, p. 97).

35. And this is the law and the course of the sun and his return when he returns; sixty times he returns and comes out, that is the great, eternal luminary which is called the sun to all eternity.

35. And this is the law and the course of the sun, and his return as often as he returns sixty times and rises, i. e. the great luminary which is named the sun, for ever and ever.

35. Detta är lagen för solens gång och dess återvändande, då den går tillbaka, återvändande och utgående i sextio dagar. Detta är det stora evigt varande ljuset, det som han kallar Solen från evighet till evighet.

36. This also is that which goes forth a great luminary, and which is named after its peculiar kind, as God commanded.

36. And that which thus ascends is the great luminary, as it is called on account of its appearance, according to the command of the Lord.

36. And that which (thus) rises is the great luminary, and is so named according to its appearance, according as the Lord commanded.

36. Detta är äfven det, som framgår ett stort ljus och som kallas efter dess särskilda slag, såsom Gud befallt.

37. And thus it goes in and out, neither slackening nor resting; but running on in its chariot by day and by night. It shines with a seventh portion of light from the moon; ⁽⁷⁸⁾ but the dimensions of both are equal.

(78) It shines with…from the moon. Or, "Its light is seven times brighter than that of the moon" (Knibb, p. 171). The Aramaic texts more clearly describe how the moon's light waxes and wanes by a half of a seventh part each day. Here in the Ethiopic version, the moon is thought of as two halves, each half being divided into seven parts. Hence, the "fourteen portions" of Enoch 73:5-8. (Knibb, p. 171).

37. And thus he ascends and descends, and is not diminished, and does not rest, but runs day and night in his chariot, and his light shines seven times stronger than that of the moon; but as regards size they are both equal.

37. As he rises, so he sets and decreases not, and rests not, but runs day and night, and his light is sevenfold brighter than that of the moon; but as regards size they are both equal.

37. Och sålunda går det in och ut, hvarken saktande eller hvilande sig, utan åkande på sin vagn dag och natt igenom. Det skiner med en sjundedel af ljus ifrån (sjudubbelt emot?) månan, men begges storlek är lika.
